Delve into Thailand’s central and northern regions on this week-long adventure. You’ll swing through the ancient capitals of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, and up to Lampang, with its famed horse-drawn carriages. Then you’re off to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to explore mountain temples, visit hilltribe villages, ride elephants, watch handicraft artisans and journey to the Golden Triangle.

Day 1:
|

Bangkok-Ayutthaya-Sukhothai
Arrive in Thailand’s former capital of Ayutthaya and visit the magnificent bronze statues at Mongkol Borpith Temple, ancient pagodas at Phra Srisanpetch and wonderful Wat Phanancherng. You’ll have lunch in a local Chainat restaurant before continuing to Khampeheng Phet’s historical park. Head for Sukhothai next for dinner and an overnight stay. (L, D)

Day 2:

|
Sukhothai-Lampang
After breakfast, venture off to Sukhothai Historical Park, Ramkamhaeng Museum and the giant Buddha statue at Wat Sri Chum. After lunch in Sri Satchanalai, continue to Lampang and visit Wat Don Tao, the one-time home of the Emerald Buddha, and other area temples. You can also take an optional horse-drawn carriage ride. Day 3:

Lampang-Lamphun-Chiang Mai
Depart for Ko Kah and Wat Phra Dhat’s Emerald Buddha, before a quick pause at Tung Kwian Market to shop for handicrafts including renowned Lampang ceramics. Next comes Lamphun and the sacred Wat Haripoonchai monument. The road to Chiang Mai follows, with lunch at a local restaurant, a stop at the Hill Tribe Museum and a visit to a woodcarving factory and handicraft centres before checking in to your hotel. Day 4:

|
Chiang Mai
You’ll stop at Phra Singh Temple with its famous Buddha image and Wat Bupparam before journeying up the mountain to Doi Suthep Temple (1,056 m). After lunch at a local restaurant, spend the afternoon at leisure. The day ends with a typical Thai dinner and a northern Thai cultural dance performance (B, L, D)

Day 5:

Chiang Mai-Hmong Hilltribe Lodge
The morning starts at Mae Sa Valley and an elephant camp followed by a visit to an orchid farm. After lunch, you’ll hop in a pick-up truck for a ride to a hilltribe village and your lodging for the night. Enjoy a BBQ dinner and a Hmong song and dance show. (B, L, D)

Day 6:

|
Hmong Hilltribe Lodge-Thaton-Chiang Rai
Head for Huay Luek’s Hmong hilltribe village. Thaton is next, where you’ll board a longtail boat for a three-hour excursion down the Kok River. You’ll pass hilltribe villages and stop at a Lahu tribe. The journey ends at Chiang Rai and your hotel for an enjoyable dinner. (B, L, D)

Day 7:

Chiang Rai-Bangkok
You’ll be transported to the notorious Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge. A boat trip on the Mekong follows, and you’ll disembark at Chiang Saen for the ride to the Chiang Rai Airport for your flight back to Bangkok and the transfer to your hotel. (B, L)
