This Mekong adventure starts off in the distant northeast province of Nakhon Phanom and a visit to the one-time home of the legendary Ho Chi Minh. Stop at a Si Songkram River village, drive to Pha Taem National Historic Park’s prehistoric paintings and cruise by boat to Khong Jiam and a Laos border market at Chong Mek.

Day 1:
|
|
Nakhon Phanom-Si Songkram River Village-Nakhon Phanom
Start your journey with a walk around Nakhon Phanom town near the old clock tower. Then visit the many silk, silver and textile shops, before walking along the Mekong past a 400-year-old temple to the Indochina Market. You’ll visit the house where Ho Chi Minh lived from 1920-1923 and a typical Isan village in the Si Songkram River area before a boat ride stopping at a fish farm. (L, D)

Day 2:

|
Nakorn Phanom-That Phanom-Mukdahan-Khong Jiam
Take part in the tradition of giving of alms to local monks before breakfast, then drive to the 1,500-year-old That Phanom Temple and have your fortune told. Next are Ban Nong Hoi Yai and the Isan Cultural Heritage Conservation Project, where you’ll attend a special welcome ceremony. Continue to Mukdahan and explore the Indochina Market, then stop in Ban Panna and its shrine in a park full of monkeys. (B, L, D)

Day 3:

Khong Jiam-Ubon Ratchathani-Laos Border Market-Khong Jiam
Drive to the Pha Taem National Historic Park and its Visitor Centre on a massive rock formation. Examine prehistoric paintings dating back 5,500 years, explained by staff from the Fine Arts Department, then continue to Ban Goom and ride a boat to Khong Jiam, where you’ll have lunch on a floating raft restaurant. In the afternoon, head to the Laos border market at Chong Mek. No visa is needed to look on the Laos side. (B, L, D)

Day 4:

Khong Jiam-Khao Phra Viharn-Ubon Ratchathani-Bangkok
You’ll visit Khao Phra Viharn’s ancient Khmer temple complex with cliff carvings on a hill overlooking Cambodia. Next are Wat Sri Muang and other major temples in Ubon Ratchathani, along with National Museum #8 with three important stone inscriptions. Then transfer to the Ubon Airport for your onward flight. For Day 4: A visit to Khao Phra Viharn may be substitued by a visit to Thai/Laos border market at Chong Mek due to an unexpected closure.
