Itinerary
Day 1: Sydney - Canberra (330 kms)
Head south from Sydney, the drive to the nation's capital, Canberra, is via magnificent scenery and historic towns such as Berrima, now a centre for arts and crafts. The park like environs of Canberra offer much to see, including fine views from surrounding hills.
Day 2: Canberra - Batemans Bay (150 kms)
The drive today includes more historic centres such as Queanbeyan, Bungendore and the national trust classified Braidwood, a former gold mining town. Batemans Bay, on the Clyde River, is famed for its seafood, with nearby Morton National Park ideal for bushwalking.
Day 3: Batemans Bay - Eden (245 kms)
Through coastal resorts Moruya and Narooma, noted for its surfing beaches, a detour to the anglers' paradise of Bermagui is recommended before continuing to Eden, a former whaling station and now centre for game fishing.
Day 4: Eden - Lakes Entrance (240 kms)
Today, you drive via the towns of Bellbird Creek, the timber centre Orbost and Nowa Nowa to Lakes Entrance, gateway to Gippsland Lakes and a popular holiday destination.
Day 5: Lakes Entrance - Melbourne (340 kms)
More fine scenery will surround you through this day's drive, which takes you via the Princess Highway and North Franston to the sophisticated city of Melbourne.
Day 6: Melbourne
