Itinerary
Day 1: Chiang Mai - Lampang (118 kms)
Leave Chiang Mai by a tree-lined route, to charming Lampoon, there to visit Wat Phra That Haripoonchai and museum. Continue to Lampang, via Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, Thung Kwian market and Wat Phra That Lampang Luang at Ko Kha.
Day 2: Lampang - Sukhothai (223 kms)
Drive through wooded hills to Wang Chin, with rest-stop by Yom river. Continue to the historic park of Sri Satchanalai, also visiting the Sathorn Gold Textile Museum, then on, via Sawankalok, to Sukhothai, birthplace of the Thai Kingdom, to view its superb monuments.
Day 3: Sukhothai -Kamphaeng Phet- Mae Sot (231 kms)
Drive through rural scenery to Kamphaeng Phet, an ancient Khmer settlement located near the Ping River. Continuing along the bank of the Ping, you come to Tak and then, via mountainous highlands, to Mae Sot.
Day 4: Mae Sot
A day at leisure to see Mae Sot, its lively morning market and nearby border trading centre. Worthwhile side trips include Wat Phra That Doi Hin Kuew, from where there are superb views and several lovely national parks.
Day 5: Mae Sot - Tak (156 kms)
Drive along the Moei valley to Mae Ramit, with visit to Burmese-style Wat Don Kaew. Proceed by narrow roads through spectacular hills, with possible visits to hilltribe villages. In the Ping River valley, stop at Wat Phra Baromthat, then a fast drive to Tak.
Day 6: Tak - Chiang Mai (275 kms)
Drive to Sam Ngao to see the huge Bhumiphol Dam, continuing to Thoen for lunch. A long uphill road leads to Li, and, passing a lignite mine, the drive is fast to Chiang Mai.
