Itinerary
Day 1: Khon Kaen - Nong Khai (165 kms)
From Khon Kaen drive north to the Mekong River and Udon Thani, with visits to the bronze-age archaeological site and museum of Ban Chiang and on to Nong Khai via a rural route, passing Pen and visiting the silk weaving village of Ban Na Kha.
Day 2: Nong Khai - Loei (245 kms)
Follow the Mekong valley upstream, through scenic landscape to Loei, with visit to Phu Phrabat historical park. Return to the Mekong River at Sang Khon, then a picturesque drive to Chiang Khan and Loei.
Day 3: Loei - Dan Sai (81 kms)
From Loei, the route climbs through hills before reaching a scenic upland valley and Phu Rue National Park. Continue to Chateau de Loei, Thailand’s premier winery, and Dan Sai.
Day 4: Dan Sai - Phitsanulok (142 kms)
From Dan Sai climb a high ridge before reaching Nakhon Thai, then proceed to Phitsanulok, passing picturesque falls and rapids on the Khek River. Phitsanulok is an important centre and revered pilgrimage site.
Day 5: Phitsanulok - Khao Kho (128 kms)
Proceed along the Khek Valley. From here, a choice of routes will take you, either to Thung Slaeng Luang National Park and Kaeng Sopha falls, or to Khao Kho and Phetchaboon via a highland plateau.
Day 6: Khao Kho – Khon Kaen (196 kms)
This last day takes you through a pretty route over a watershed covering the Nam Nao National Park, to Khon Kaen.
