Pre-travel medical examinations

 

 

It is recommended that international passengers seek a pre-travel medical examination and advice on vaccinations, safety precautions and information on the current situation at the destination, before and for the duration of the trip.

 

 

Whilst traveling

 

 

Air travel may have physical or psychological effects: stress, abdominal distension, ear pain, sinus congestion, leg swelling, body ache, airsickness, jet lag and, in rare cases, deep vein thrombosis.

 

Some recommendations to keep in good form during your flight:
• Avoid heavy meals before and during flight
• Breath deeply, be relaxed, as stress increases gastric acidity and abdominal discomfort
• Keep hydrated by drinking water or fruit juice throughout the flight; avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks because of their diuretic effect
• Use moisturizer to prevent skin dryness
• Wear loose fitting cloths, take off shoes and move around in the cabin
• Stretch and move your body as recommended for in-flight exercises
• Consult your doctor for appropriate treatment to prevent airsickness; keep eyes fixed on a non-moving object during turbulence
• For personnel hygiene, wash hands regularly

 

Well controlled, diabetics can travel by adjusting their treatment and meal times to specific time zones. Patients with insulin should inform the airline before departure and carry with them a medical certificate (in English) for bringing syringes and needles on board.

 

Some health hazards from pressure changes during flight : 

• Otitis and sinusitis

Passengers with nasal allergies or chronic sinusitis are more prone to have ear and sinus problems because of low humidity in the cabin, changes in cabin pressure during ascent and descent aggravated nasal congestion. Especially during descent, the Eustachian tube tends to collapse in the middle ear, resulting in the characteristic “pop” sensation, difficulty hearing and pain. To avoid ear blockage :

o Keep hydrated by drinking throughout the flight
o Use nasal decongestant spray, normal saline spray or other decongestants 30 minutes before departure to prevent nasal swelling
o To prevent blockage, practice frequent swallowing, chewing or gentle Vasalva maneuver (holding nose and generating pressure with closed mouth until ears pop)

• Jet lag

 

Trans-meridian flights through multiple time zones on long-haul routes can cause sleeping difficulties stemming from biological clock and circadian rhythm disorder. The main symptoms are sleeping difficulty, tiredness, dizziness, constipation and a decrease in mental and/or physical performance. Elderly passengers, passengers traveling on night flights and eastward tend to be more sensitive to jet lag. To re-synchronize the internal biological clock more easily, some tricks can be used:

 

o Avoid drinking alcohol and caffeinated drinks

o Melatonin or short action hypnotics can be used (melatonin is contra-indicated in children, people taking warfarin or those who have epilepsy)
o Going to bed one hour earlier and awakening one hour earlier three days before traveling eastward and later if traveling westward
o Natural light exposure during day at the new destination will help resynchronization

• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

 

So-called “economy class syndrome” is a condition in which the thrombus develops in deep veins due to long distance flights, variation of cabin atmosphere (decrease in humidity and hypoxia, for example), immobility and dehydration. A dangerous consequence is that DVT can result in a pulmonary embolism. Symptoms of DVT can come late, after flights, indicated by aching or soreness in the calf, swelling in the calf or ankles, slight fever or feeling unwell.

 

People with the following risk factors should be aware of DVT :

 

o People over 40 
o Past history of venous thrombosis
o Recent surgery especially abdominal, pelvic or leg surgery 
o Prolonged immobilization
o Coagulation problems or increased blood viscosity
o Pregnancy or recent delivery
o Cancer
o Cardiovascular diseases
o Estrogen hormone therapy or oral contraception
o Cigarettes smokers
o Varicose veins
o Obesity

 

Safety precaution to avoid DVT :

 

o Wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing
o Wear graduated compression stockings
o Keep hydrated by drinking lots of water throughout the flight
o Leave the underside of the seat in front of you free to be able to move the legs
o Walk often in the cabin
o Exercise as recommended in the aircraft
o High risk passengers should consult their doctor before travelling for prevention (such as with low molecular weight heparin or aspirin)

 

On board Medical Assistance

 

TG like every airline has some capability to render medical care inflight. Cabin crews are well and regularly trained for first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and they also may ask for assistance from an on-board medical doctor. Medical equipment available includes:

 

• First- aid kits (to used by cabin crew)
• Medical kits (one white and one black) are available for on-board medical doctors or with use of defibrillator
• Automatic external defibrillator (AED)
• Wheelchair (for long distance flight)

Privacy Protection

 

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires you to provide your full name, date of birth, and gender for the purpose of watch list screening, under the authority of 49 U.S.C. section 114, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 and 49 C.F.R parts 1540 and 1560. You may also provide your Redress Number, if available. Failure to provide your full name, date of birth, and gender may result in denial of transport or denial of authority to enter the boarding area. TSA may share information you provide with law enforcement or intelligence agencies or others under its published system of records notice. Airlines are now collecting additional passenger information as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) implements Secure Flight, a program developed to allow for uniform watch list matching by TSA to identify known and suspected terrorists.

 

How will Secure Flight affect me?

Passengers must provide the following information to the airlines in order to allow TSA to conduct watch list matching:
• Full name*
• Date of birth
• Gender
• Redress Number (if available)**

Providing the data elements allows Secure Flight to more effectively perform watch list matching, resulting in a better travel experience for passengers.

Some nations require passenger airplanes arriving from other countries to be sprayed with insecticide in order to protect plants, animals and people.

These countries require the spraying of insecticide while passengers are on board: 
Grenada, India, Kiribati, Madagascar, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay

These countries allow planes to be treated while they are empty; the pesticides used are designed to be effective for up to two months. 
Australia, Barbados, Fiji, Jamaica, New Zealand and Panama 

These countries require spraying of planes from particular regions where there are contagious or infectious diseases. 
Czech Republic, Indonesia, South Africa, Switzerland and the United Kingdom

• Note :

• 1. When a passenger is involuntarily rerouted to a lower class of service, the higher class baggage allowance shall be applied even though the refund for the fare difference is made.

  2. The exemption from extra baggage shall be applied to any passengers who traveling on the conditions agreed by THAI and Government sector.

  The exemption shall be applied according to the condition on the passenger's ticket only. By government order or agreement, certain passenger categories may have a free baggage allowance deviating from the regular system. Such amended free baggage allowance is stated in the passenger's ticket.
  3. The condition on the 2nd note is applicable to passengers traveling from Thailand only. For other areas/countries, follow the rules applied by the national carriers concerned.
  4. In case of travel on combined services for through journeys where the passenger travels partly on F-class and partly on C-, U-, or Y-class, the free baggage allowance applicable on each sector of the trip shall be that applicable to the class of service for which the fare is paid.
  In case the passenger who has paid F-class fare travels on C-, U- or Y-class, the free baggage allowance shall be that applicable to F-class.
  5. Foldable stroller can be loaded in compartment without additional charge.

• In addition to the checked baggage allowance, each passenger is allowed to hand carry one baggage at maximum length 56 cm (22 inches), width 45 cm (18 inches), thickness 25 cm (10 inches). These dimensions include wheels, handles, and side pockets.
  Total weight of the carry-on baggage must not exceed seven kg (15 lb).
  Passengers are required to place the baggage in the overhead compartment or under their own seat.

• Baggage Allowance

• Passengers may carry free of charge baggage as specified and subject to the conditions and limitations in THAI Regulations.

  The weight allowance has been introduced by THAI for a journey wholly within TC3 (Asia, Australia, New Zealand) and a journey between TC2 (Europe, Africa, Middle East) and TC3 (Asia, Australia, New Zealand) where the Piece Concept used to apply for a journey to/from the USA and Canada. 
  For travel to and from the United States Thai Airways provides passengers with a free baggage allowance for adults and infant according to the chart below.

  Carry-on baggage

  Thai Airways International Public Company Ltd. will permit one carry- on bag plus one small personal item per customer to be carried on the aircraft at no charge. The maximum combined linear measurement (length x width x thickness) of the carry-on bag must not exceed 22 inches x 18 inches x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 cm). The maximum weight of the carry-on bag is 15 pounds (seven kg). For more information on allowable carry-on baggage please refer to Baggage Policy (General Service - Carry on Items)

  8.The applicable excess baggage charge shall apply to:

     a. The excess number of baggage: each bag (Piece) exceeding two checked bags (Piece)

     b. Oversized Baggage: each bag (Piece) exceeding the dimension of 62 inches (158cm) but not exceeding 80 inches (203 cm)

  9. Twice the applicable excess baggage charge shall apply to :

     a. The excess number plus oversized: each bag (Piece) exceeding two checked bags (Piece) and exceeding the dimension of 62 inches (158 cm), but not exceeding 80 inches (203 cm)

  10. Any bag (Piece),

     a. the sum of the three dimensions of which exceeds 80 inches (203 cm), and / or

     b. the weight of which exceeds 70 lbs (32 kg) shall be subject for the following:

        i. Such bag (Piece) shall not be carried as accompanied baggage unless prior handling arrangements have been made in advance and get confirmation from TG.

  ii. Such bag (Piece) shall be weighed and shall be charged at three times the applicable excess baggage charges for the first 45 kg of fraction thereof for each additional 10 kg. Of the fraction thereof, one (One) additional excess baggage charge shall be applied.

  Interline Journey

  General Information

  Baggage Allowance determination and excess baggage charges calculation apply to baggage to be through checked from the point of departure to the point of arrival without stopover at any of the intermediate points. If passenger takes a stopover at an intermediate point, a new assessment of baggage allowance and baggage charges, if applicable, will be measured from the point of departure following the stopover.
  
  If you travel with additional weight or piece baggage which is considered as over carrier baggage allowance, the excess baggage charge shall be applied. THAI provides the amount of the charges varied in accordance with your baggage checked portion when you travel with THAI. If your journey and/or your baggage checked portion are comprised of more than one carrier, other carrier’s baggage rules may apply. 

  Interline Baggage Selection:
  
  Generally, a common baggage provision, IATA Resolution 302, is applicable to IATA airline members (including THAI). The resolution regulates which carrier’s baggage rules apply when your journey and/or baggage checked portion comprised of two or more carriers (Interline baggage provision). The IATA Resolution 302 is considered in accordance with the IATA Traffic Conference Areas.
  
  In order to facilitate the adjustment of fares, fees and other charges, IATA has divided the world into three main ‘Areas’. These Areas are called Area1, Area2 and Area3. They are regularly used in the interpretation of tariff rules and in the calculation of international air fares. Airlines sometimes refer to these areas as TC (Tariff Conference), TC1 (for Area1), TC2 (for Area2) and TC3 (for Area3).
  
  Under each Area there are smaller ‘sub-areas’ or ‘regions’ which, in the IATA context, may have a different meaning from that generally implied by the geographical term.
  
  Area 1 is composed of the whole of the Western Hemisphere.
  Area 2 is Europe, Middle, and Africa.
  Area 3 is composed of the whole of Asia and the neighboring islands (with the exception of the part included in TC2); Australia, New Zealand and neighboring islands and also the Pacific Islands (except those included in TC1).

  Determination of carrier’s baggage rule in accordance with your baggage checked portion

  1.     For travel between two or more Tariff Conference Areas, the carrier performing carriage on the first sector that crosses from one area to another on that checked portion determines the baggage rule.

  2.     For travel between Tariff Conference Sub-areas, the carrier performing carriage on the first sector that crosses from one sub-area to another on that checked portion determines the baggage rule.               

  3.     For travel within a Tariff Conference Sub-area, the carrier performing carriage on the first international sector on that checked portion determines the baggage rule.

  4.     For travel within a single country, the carrier performing on the first Operating Carrier on the checked portion determines the baggage rule.

  Note: If you travel involved a so-called code-share flight, the carrier performing as the aircraft  operating on that checked portion determines the baggage rule.

  Travel to/from the USA

  In general, for passengers whose ultimate ticketed origin or destination is the United States and/or its territories, the baggage provisions selected at the beginning of the itinerary shall apply throughout the journey, regardless of stopovers.
  
  If THAI baggage rule applies on your journey to the United States/US Territories, it is also THAI baggage rule applies on the return though you makes a stopover en-route.
  
  In case of code-share flights that include a point in the United States/US Territories, the carrier performing as the marketing carrier determines the baggage rule.
  
  If your journey involves multiple airline partners, please be aware that baggage rules may vary. The baggage rules that apply for your journey may be those of our partner airlines. In some cases, they may apply their own baggage rule regardless of the code-share rules and rules for both outbound and inbound portion of travel.  All liquids, aerosols, and gels in carry on baggage must be carried in containers with a   capacity not  greater than 100ml.

 

- Liquids carried in containers larger than 100ml. are not accepted, even if the container is only partially filled.

  - Containers must be placed in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of one litre.

 

 

 

- The plastic bag must be presented for visual examination at the screening point.

- Only one transparent re-sealable plastic bag per passenger may be permitted.

- Exemptions may be made for medications, baby milk/foods and passengers with special dietary requirements.

- The plastic bag must be presented separately from other cabin baggage at screening checkpoint.

- Items purchased either at airport duty free shops or on board aircraft must be packed in a sealed plastic bag, and not have been opened. Passengers may be required to display a satisfactory proof of purchase.

Travel Document

 

 

Passengers traveling overseas should check the validity of the following documents:

1. Passport Passports of individuals traveling overseas must have a validity of more than 6 months. An exception may be made depending on the country concerned but this depends on their regulations. The passport holder must contact the embassy concerned to check the travel requirements prior to conducting travel.

2. Visa Individuals are recommended to check travel-related information at respective embassies, as each country has different requirements for foreign nationals' entry. TG Stand-by Upgrading Facility

 

Effective 01APR14

I.  General Rules – TG Stand-by upgrading is the facility applicable in the “From…..To…..” basis at passenger contentment and satisfaction. There are two tables of the upgrading surcharges/fees shown in different currencies, varied by boarding point: 

a.  TG Stand-by upgrading for sector(s) from Thailand where currency shown in THB (THAI Baht), 

b.  TG Stand-by upgrading for other sectors except Thailand where currency shown in different Local Currency. 

 

1.  The stand-by upgrading can be requested after the original ticket has been issued.

2.  The stand-by upgrading shall only be applied from Economy to Business class (effective 01APR14) and Business class to First class (effective 01MAY14). 

Note: The upgrading surcharge table from Business to First class shall be applicable at Check-in Counter of the boarding point on the Departure Date. 

3.  The stand-by upgrade charge facility is applicable to all TG document issued by using TG Carrier Fares (both normal and/or special fares) provided that passenger is travelling on Thai Operated Flight (TG 3-digits flight number).

Note: Industry Discount, Agent Discount, ZED Fares, ROP Award Redemption and Barter tickets are not permitted.

4.  The upgrading process shall be done at the boarding airport of the applicable sector upon check-in, subjected to seat available at the time of departure. 

5.  The upgrading facility is applicable to all journey types: One Way, Round Trip, Circle Trip, and Open Jaw.  

6.  The applicable charge table is permitted for one-way basis.

7.  The surcharge level are quoted in accordance with an applicable local currency and based on the actual amount. Any other discount such as Child / Infant, Tour Conductor and Agent Discounts are not permitted.

8.  Any additional taxes or surcharges incurred with the upgrading are on passenger expenses. 

9.  Mileage is earned on the original paid fares.

10.  Refund is not applicable to the upgrading surcharges.

 

II. Privileges for stand-by upgrade 

 

1.  Baggage Allowance – permitted in accordance with the new class of service provided that the upgrading process is done at check-in counter.

2.  Lounge Access – permitted in accordance with the new class of service provided that the upgrading process is done at check-in counter.

3.  Meal Service – in accordance with the new class of service if the upgrading process is completed 2 hours prior to flight departure.

While en route our flight attendants will provide hot beverage service to passengers. In order to prevent burn injuries from hot liquid spills, we would like the passengers to:

-When a coffee/tea cup is placed on a carry tray, please wait until the flight attendant finishes pouring the hot liquid and then pick up the coffee/tea cup with caution.

-In case of no carry tray in use, the flight attendant will pour the hot liquid into a coffee/tea cup that the passenger holds with a handle. Please wait until he/she finishes pouring before taking it back; otherwise  hot liquid may spill out and possibly cause injury.

Passenger seats on board all THAI aircraft have been designed, in line with standard aviation regulations, to be properly fitted, convenient and secure. In particular on long haul flights, some passengers may prefer to change their position by lying on the cabin floor around seating areas, but this can pose a threat to their own safety. Despite a clean and tidy floor, tiny dust particles in the carpet may cause allergic symptoms, and even affect the respiratory system. Moreover, the on-board oxygen may not be circulated fully and sufficiently down on the floor, causing difficult to breathe, and, upon getting up, the passenger may feel light-headed and dizzy. Most importantly, when lying on the cabin floor contact with the metal parts of the seat and floor can cause severe injury, especially during turbulence.

 

Pet Travel

       Transporting pets can be a stressful experience for both the passenger and their beloved pet. Therefore, THAI is committed to providing caring, comfortable and stress-free service for both.
       Advanced arrangements for pet travel services must be made at time of booking, at least 48 hours prior to flight departure.  Passengers are required to alert their travel agent or local THAI office at the time of booking that they will be traveling with their pet. THAI’s staff will check on space availability and provide advice on regulations for the travel of pets to the final destination and/or transit points.

Essential Documents and Health Requirements
Please ensure that all necessary documents have been obtained before departing, as follows:

Valid export and import permits from the relevant animal quarantine officer
•    Valid health and rabies vaccination certificate from the authorizing veterinarian
•    The Animal Quarantine Bureau of Japan must be notified at least 40 days in advance of scheduled arrival of dogs and cats that will enter Japan. The Bureau will issue a document known as ‘Approval of Inspection of Animal’.
•    Prior to entering India, a –No Objection Certificate- (NOC) must be issued locally by the Animal Quarantine and Certification Services (AQCS).
•     Dogs and cats entering EU communities must be implanted with Microchip.
•     Some countries, e.g. UK, Australia, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong (SAR China), have imposed regulations to allow pets into their countries as cargo only. Please refer to the topic –Cargo-.
•     THAI strongly recommends that passengers obtain details regarding documents required for pet transportation from the relevant embassy website or your nearest embassy.
•     There are a limited number of pets allowed, due to rules and regulations of each country.
•     Some breeds of dogs, e.g. pitbull terrier dogs, are prohibited into some countries, such as Thailand.
•     Dogs and cats less than 6 months old are prohibited entry into some countries.
•     Sick/injured/pregnant pets are prohibited from transport.

 

Pets as Checked Baggage (AVIH)

  
     This service will allow passengers to check-in and collect their pet at the passenger terminals of their flight’s departure and arrival airports. The pet will be loaded in an aircraft hold just beneath the passenger cabin where it will be safe and in a temperature controlled environment.
   Flight to/from USA the maximum weight/dimension of pet including the container is 32kgs and dimensions 54 inches length, 27 inches height, 33 inches wide.

Pets as Cargo ( Unaccompanied pets)

       This service allows passengers to transport other pets, not only dogs and cats. Shipping pets will be made through the cargo terminal at the flight departure and arrival airport. The pets will not accompany the passenger; therefore, it is required to make arrangements in advance due to space limitation in the air-conditioned cargo hold for transportation of live animals.

Charges as Cargo

 

      The cost will be more economically feasible compared to AVIH (animal in hold). Passengers will pay for an airways bill instead of excess baggage.

Travelling with Guide Dog or Assistance Dogs

      THAI can accept guide dogs for the blind and assistance dogs for the deaf in the cabin to some destinations. Passengers must ensure that all animal quarantine regulations and documentations for the entry/transit are provided.

       This service will be carried without charge. Please contact THAI local office at least 48 hours in advance of flight departure. The dog will not occupy a seat and will be located next to you but not at the emergency exit row. The dog must be harnessed during the flight.

       Flight to/from USA  should a passenger with disability has to carry his/her guide dog/assistance dog or emotional support dog

 

Container Requirements

The design and construction of the container must conform to IATA Live Animal Regulations. The following requirement must be met, otherwise THAI may refuse to transport the pet:

• The container must be large enough for the pet to stand up, turn and lie down in a natural manner.
• It must be strong enough to protect the pet during take off and landing. It must have at least 3 sides.
• The door must be secure in such a manner that it will not open accidentally or the pet cannot open it.
• Feeding and watering instructions must be affixed to the container.

Suitable pet containers are available in most professional pet stores.

Expectant Mothers

     Pregnancies last on average 40 weeks. For uncomplicated pregnancies, THAI has imposed certain guidelines for travelling expectant mothers, as follows:

• After the 28th week of pregnancy, passengers must obtain a medical certificate of fitness to travel issued by their attending obstetrician, stating the number of weeks of pregnancy and estimated date of delivery. The medical certificate issued by the doctor must be issued no later than 7 days prior to departure, which must be carried with the expectant passenger when boarding the flight.

• For safety reasons, THAI reserves the right to deny boarding under certain circumstances if expecting passengers choose not to carry a medical certificate.

• Expectant mothers may be permitted to travel up to the end of the 36th week of pregnancy on flights less than 4 hours (the estimated date of delivery being 4 weeks or more).

• On flights more than 4 hours, expectant mothers may be permitted to travel up to the end of 34th week (for pregnancies with the date of delivery estimated at being 6 weeks or more).

• Expectant mothers whose pregnancy has entered beyond the 36th week of pregnancy will not be permitted to travel due to safety reasons.

Advice for elderly passengers

Preparation for air travel

• Avoid traveling in remote areas.
• Consult your family doctor regarding appropriate medications, vaccinations, etc.
• For any existing, chronic illness, to ensure that health conditions are safe for the trip, keep any necessary medication in your hand luggage.
• Pack appropriate clothing for the destination.
• Confirm your health insurance before flying

During flight

• Exercise and try to move around in the aircraft to prevent blood clots.
• Keep hydrated by drinking a lot of water; avoid alcohol and coffee.

At the destination

• Elderly passengers ¬– like small children – are more prone to severe dehydration, therefore they should avoid long term sun exposure.
• Prevent constipation by increasing water intake or using laxatives if necessary.
• Be mindful of food and water hygiene.
• Take adequate rest to adjust to the local time zone.
• Keep skin clean to avoid infections.

Contra-indication and advice for sick passengers travelling by plane

Sick passengers are sensitive to minor changes, therefore medical consultation before travelling is necessary to minimize health risks.  Medications must be kept in the hand luggage. Travelers with metallic prosthesis, cardiac pacemaker, internal defibrillator or those who have to carry medical equipment on board must travel with a medical certificate.  
 
Disabled passengers who need assistance during flight must be accompanied and notify in advance for special arrangements by cabin crew.

Passengers with medical conditions not treated and stabilized, or passengers which conditions that can be aggravated during flight, must have medical clearance before flight reservation. A MEDIF (medical information form) must be filled by treating doctor to inform the details of the medical conditions, and if special equipment such as oxygen, a wheelchair or stretcher is needed. The company has the right to refuse, delay or ask for changing travel conditions. Travelling by plane is permitted only for treated and stabilized patients.

The following conditions are contra-indicated for air travel :

• Infant less than 7 days of age,  the cabin atmosphere can cause problem for newborns. MEDIF is needed for premature babies.

• Pregnant women : non complicated pregnancy is accepted on board; the conditions depend on the airlines to prevent premature labor on board; caution should be exercised about frequent flying during early weeks because of hypoxia. The conditions for pregnant women are as follows :

o Pregnancy more than 28 weeks must have a medical certificate confirming the date of delivery and conditions of pregnancy,
o Single pregnancy can travel until 36th week for the flight less than 4 hours and 34th weeks for the flight more than 4 hours. The medical certificate with estimate date of delivery and confirmation of a normal pregnancy is needed.
o Multiple or complicated pregnancy (placenta previa, past history of premature delivery etc.) are relatively contra-indicated for travelling long distance by air, the medical approval from the company is absolutely needed.
o Pregnancy more than 36 weeks is an absolute contra-indication for travelling by air.

• Patient with cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases

Assure sufficient quantities of cardiac medications for the entire trip, including sublingual nitroglycerin, and keep in carry-on luggage. Keep a separate list of medications including dosing intervals and tablet size in the event that medications are lost. Limit unnecessary ambulation, particularly inflight. The following conditions are not safe for air travel :

o Unstable chest pain
o Recent myocardial infarction (MI) and congestive heart failure should not fly until at least 6 weeks have passed and they are back to usual daily activities no more chest pain
o Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and other chest surgeries should wait until the air is resorbed 2 weeks before air travel because air is transiently introduced into the chest cavity, there is a risk for barotrauma at decreased atmospheric pressure
o Uncontrolled heart failure
o Untreated hypertension with systolic blood pressure higher than 160 mmHg. No contra-indication to air travel for patients with hypertension as long as it is under reasonable control. Such patients should be reminded to carry their medications onboard
o Untreated arrhythmia (heart rhythm must be controlled and on anti coagulant for travelling)
o Decompensated valvular diseases
o Scuba diving less than 24 hours or decompression sickness
o Untreated or unstable pneumothorax
o Undrainaged pleural effusion
o Asthma, air travel is contra-indicated for those with asthma that is labile, severe, or that has required recent hospitalization. For asthmatics of less severity who are fit to fly, it is imperative that they are reminded to hand-carry on board any vital medication, particularly inhalers for rapid relief of symptoms
o Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Patients with chronic bronchitis, interstitial lung disease and emphysema are susceptible to significant inflight hypoxemia, depending on their baseline PaO2. Preflight evaluation of these patients is ability to walk 50 meters  or climb stairs without dyspnea and shortness of breath
o Uncontrolled respiratory failure
o Patient under mechanical ventilation or with the unstable condition for the trip
o Active pulmonary infection
o Neuromuscular diseases with hypoventilation and require a mechanical ventilation
o Pulmonary tuberculosis especially in immunodeficients treated less than 2 weeks
o Thoracic surgery less than 3 weeks
o Special precaution for the patients with tracheostomy  because of low humidity in the cabin

• Central Nervous System Disorders

o Uncontrolled epilepsy or the patients undergone for brain surgery with no complications less than 2 weeks. Normally, the passengers with stable epilepsy or after brain surgery may be more prone to seizures during a long flight, mild hypoxia and hyperventilation are known precipitating factors, in addition to the aggravation of fatigue, anxiety and irregular medication. Whilst it would not be appropriate to change medication immediately prior to a trip, consideration should be given to providing extra anti-convulsive medication. If nothing else, the passengers with epilepsy must ensure that they have sufficient medication in their hand baggage for the duration of the flight and also for any unexpected delays
o Following a stroke or cerebrovascular accident passengers usually have to wait at least 2 weeks before travel if stable or recovering. For those with cerebral artery insufficiency, hypoxia may lead to problems and supplementary oxygen may be advisable
o Patients with accident and brain injury less than 15 days
o Untreated brain edema or lumbar puncture less than 1 week
o Patients who have recent brain scan with use of contrast media less than 3 days
o Psychiatric patients need medical clearance in advance of intended travel. Patients with psychotic disorders who are stabilized on medication and are accompanied by a knowledgeable companion plus suitable sedation may be able to fly

• Gastro-Intestinal Disease :

Passengers may experience abdominal discomfort because of gas expansion in fight.

o Patients who have abdominal surgery in which hollow viscus has been sutured are at risk of perforation or hemorrhage as a result of gas expansion at altitude. Air travel should be discouraged for 2 weeks following any abdominal surgical procedure
o Travelers with colostomies are not at increased risk during air travel although intestinal distension may increase fecal output. The use of a large colostomy bag is recommended. More frequent changes may be necessary for smaller bags and extra supplies should be carried in the cabin hand baggage
o Patients with intestinal occlusion or with hemorrhage from ulcer sites or rupture of esophageal varices. For hemorrhage, travel may be permitted if there is clear endoscopic evidence of healing or wait for 3 weeks and hemoglobin level more than 10 g/dl
o Severe gastroenteritis with dehydration
o Patients who have gastric or intestinal surgery in the past 7 days
o Patients who have a colonoscopy in the past 24 hours

• Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT):

Passengers are at risk of developing economic class syndrome from cramped seating, inactivity, prolonged immobilization, depletion of body fluids causing increased blood viscosity, poor blood circulation and swelling of feet and legs then a thrombus develops in the deep veins. To reduce the risk while traveling it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes or take shoes off, exercise the calves, mobilize, stretch arms and legs every couple of hours, walk around the cabin, avoid sleeping pills, remain adequately hydrated and avoid excess alcohol.

• Others medical problems

o Ophtalmological conditions such as retinal detachment less than 3 weeks, acute glaucoma or recently operations (in the past 1 month), recent cataract surgery, unhealed keratitis, ocular surgery in the past 3 months
o Acute sinusitis or acute otitis
o Ear surgery in the past 3 months
o Severe anemia with hemoglobin less than 10 g/dl. At low oxygen levels in cabin, passengers may experience lightheadedness or even lose consciousness during flight and hemoglobin less than 8.5 g/dl is contra-indicated for air travel
o Diseases that need medical equipments forbidden by airline regulation
o Transmitted infections : chicken pox, measles, mumps, pertussis, herpes zoster etc.
o Immunodeficient patients with severe complications
o Unstable diabetes must not travel by air. For well controlled diabetes, the first step is to order from the airline, in advance, the appropriate diabetic meal. Diabetic travelers should carry all medications (as well as needles, syringes, blood glucose monitors, sugared snacks, and a device to store needles/lances) in carry-on luggage and not in checked luggage. Journeys may across several time zones. It is recommended to remain on departure time during the flight and attempt to readjust to local time on arrival at destinations
o All recent surgery or recent injury, gas trapped within the body will cause problems at altitude
o Recent fracture under plaster cast (cast must be split for traveling to avoid compartment syndrome or harmful swelling on long flight)
o Severe burn or infected large wounds
o Terminal stage of illness which can deteriorate during trip
o Precaution for the patients with urinary catheter, balloon must be filled with water, the catheter changed before departure with no sign of  urinary tract infection by direct examination and by urine culture

Nut Allergy

       Due to the number of passengers on THAI flights, the company cannot guarantee a 100% nut-free environment in its lounges nor aircraft cabins. Nevertheless, if THAI is informed well in advance of a passenger’s medical condition, the company will strive to ensure that each touch point is aware of passenger requirements.
       We also highly recommend that you carry your medication and/or medical ID bracelets at all times, as well as alert THAI staff in cases of allergic reaction.

Traveling with Infants

Bassinet (BSCT)

• Baby bassinets are available on THAI flights that are over 2 hours. THAI’s bassinets measure 75 x 35 x 22 cms., for infants weighing no more than 10kgs. (22 pounds).

• For safety reasons, only infants 6 months old or less will be entitled a bassinet. When making a reservation, a “baby bassinet” may be requested, at least 48 hours before flight departure.

Infant car seat

• If you wish to bring your own car seat into the cabin, a child fare will be charged. The car seat must be designed to carry an infant and placed securely in the passenger seat.

Baby diapers

Baby diapers are available on board flights operated on selected international routes and may be obtained from the cabin crew.  Aircraft lavatories are also equipped with pull-down tables for changing diapers. However, THAI highly recommends that passengers bring their own infant diapers, as only limited quantities of size L diapers are available on certain international routes.

Medical Guidelines

Some patients are at a stage of illness with risks for air travel. Airlines have a right to be concerned about carrying them because the airline assumes a large risk. Deaths in flight are traumatic for flight crew and a serious medical deterioration may require a flight diversion at great cost and inconvenience to the airline, crew and other passengers. A medical information form (MEDIF) is needed for assessments of patient's fitness to fly. The guidelines from Thai International Airways resulted from the IATA Manual, and consultation with specialists of each fields.

Unaccompanied Minors / Young Passengers

      The person accompanying the child can be a family member, guardian or other appointed person. However, if the child is traveling alone, parents must apply for unaccompanied minor service with THAI.

       For children traveling between the age of 5 to 17 years old one must contact their local THAI office to make reservations and request a special assistance & handling form for unaccompanied minors. The handling form requires the age and date of birth of a child, contact number of an appointed guardian that can always be contacted both at the departing and arriving airport. The information enables THAI to make necessary arrangements and assist the child in the best possible way.
Any service charge is included and stated on ticket booking.
 
         Special Conditions
•    THAI will not accept children traveling alone on any itineraries including the transfer between Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang Airport.
•    THAI will not accept children traveling alone that involves an overnight stop or transfer, or stopover exceeding 6 hours, unless the arrangement is provided for a child’s assistance at the transfer point.
•    If a child travels with other air carriers, different regulations may apply. The age limit for unaccompanied minors on other air carriers may differ, and it is advisable to consult the carrier concerned.
•    Mentally-challenged children are not eligible to apply for the unaccompanied minor service.
•    An unaccompanied minor is not permitted to travel with pets.
•    It is important to check that all visas and other formalities are completed.
•    Additional documentation may be required for certain countries; such as minors of other nationalities travelling to the Philippines must obtain a waiver of exclusion issued by the Philippines Embassy.

 

Ticket Fare and Service Fee

       For International Routes: An adult fare is charged for children who apply for the unaccompanied minor service, between 5 – to below 17 years old. The service fee is USD 60 per flight.
 
       For Domestic Routes in Thailand: Fifty percent (50%) of the normal fare for children, between 5 – to below 12 years old is applied if the unaccompanied service is required.
       Please check with the local THAI office for specific fares and regulations. There is no service fee on domestic routes.

 

 

 

At the airport

       THAI requires that parents or guardian be at the airport with a child and remain at the airport until the flight departs. Parents must complete check-in formalities for THAI to accept a child to travel.  Ground staff at the departure hall will transfer the child to cabin attendants for boarding, and the child will be well-taken care of during the entire flight.
 
       Upon arrival at the destination, THAI’s ground staff will accompany the child from the aircraft through all the arrival procedures until they meet the appointed guardian, who must identify themselves in order to pick up the child. The security and well-being of a child is of the utmost importance, and THAI ensures that he/she will arrive safely and handed over appropriately

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Air Travel with Children

• Inform the local reservation & ticketing officers about children’s information for appropriate seating and preparation of facilities on the aircraft

o The basket for babies less than 6 months of age, weighing less than 10 kg and not exceeding 62 cm in length  
o For babies less than 2 years old, an FAA-approved car-seat can be used on the normal paid seat

• Babies and toddlers must be held in the arms during take off and landing

• Prepare adequate clothing to keep the baby warm in the plane

• Air travel is not recommended for infants during the first week of life, when a newborn’s body is still adjusting to life outside the uterus and to assure that the child is healthy and free of congenital defects.

• Children with chronic disease may be at risk for hypoxia during flight, and a physician should be consulted before air travel.

• Changing cabin pressure cause temporary changes in middle ear pressure, which can result in pain. To minimize this, it is helpful to have a baby nurse a bottle, breast or suck on a pacifier (older children may drink from a cup or chewing gum) particularly during descent. This will help equalize the air pressure in the middle ear.  

• For children who suffer from motion sickness, medication can be used 30 minutes before departure

Wheelchair Requests

Passengers must request wheelchairs at the time of booking, or at least 48 hours before departure date, if a wheelchair is needed.

THAI provides wheelchair service without any extra charge. However, please be advised that passengers must be able to take care of themselves during the flight. THAI will assist wheelchair passengers from wheelchair to seat, as well as to the aircraft’s lavatories.
 

           THAI provides wheelchairs on board the aircraft to enabling cabin crew to assist passengers when needed to the lavatory. However, cabin crew cannot assist the passenger inside the lavatory.
 
       If you are unable to take care of your personal needs inflight, we urge you to travel with a companion or escort, who can readily assist you and manage your needs.
       On your departure, THAI’s staff will assist you from the check-in counter to the aircraft door or cabin seat, and upon arrival, the staff will assist you with the baggage, through the arrival area.
 
       If a passenger has his/her own wheelchair, the size of personal wheelchair measurements and weight must be informed when booking, to enable us to make the necessary arrangements in order to load your wheelchair into the aircraft hold, and return it to you at the baggage hall of your destination airport.  If your wheelchair weighs over 32 kilograms (71 lbs.), special authorization from THAI is needed, due to weight and space restrictions at some airports.
