The city is home to over 11 million people and oftens serves as a transit point for visitors heading for the country's southern beach hotspots or other parts of Southeast Asia.

Apart from traditional bars and eateries dotted all over the city, new and more contemporary dining concepts are continually opening with top local and international DJs spinning tunes in a host of hip new venues.  One of the newest districts is Thong Lor, with an enviable offering a night hops for visitors and locals.

#3 Bangkok Boating - discover the other side of this vibrant city

Boating Bangkok

Bangkok is affectionately known as the Venice of the East....a city of over 6 million people, built almost entirely over water.   The intricate web of canals connects the city with the main river channel, the famous Chayo Praya River that flows to south to the Gulf of Thailand.

Take a river taxi or ferry to visit some of Bangkok's highlights such as Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn and go exploring by long-tail boat down the 'back street' canals to see how the locals live.  You can also take a ferry or boat to visit the Floating Markets and the Asiatique Night Bazaar.

There are also a number of river boat operators that offer leisurely river cruises to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya or there are many options for a romantic dinner cruise offer by the riverside hotels such as the Royal Orchid Sheraton, Shangrila and The Peninsula.

To find out more about exploring Bangkok's river and canals, visit the Tourism Authority of Thailand here.

#4 Bangkok Bargains - it's all about the shopping!

Bangkok Bargains

Bangkok is 'shopper heaven' with a seemingly endless array of shopping opportunities from local markets to glamorous shopping malls and everything in between.   No matter where you choose to stay, there'll be shopping nearby or a least a quick BTS Skytrain or MTR underground ride away.

There are even shopping maps available so you can plan your day around your favourites shopping haunts.   Markets open early morning and the larger centres like Central Department Stores, ZEN, Centraworld and MBK open from 10am until late each day.   Check websites for opening times during Festivals and Public Holidays.

#5 Blissful Bangkok - aaaah, time to luxuriate!

Blissful Bangkok

When your shopping, sightseeing, exploring and eating missions are complete, you'll need to take a breath and recover.  What better way than to find your way into one of the many Spa resorts, day Spas or local Thai massage retreats found across the city.  You can even have your hair, nails and massage treatment done all in the same place and for a fraction of the cost you would pay at home.

Visit the Tourism Authority of Thailand for recommendations on the best places to visit here.

For THAI's Premium Customers, visit our Royal Orchid Spa Lounge at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport for a relaxing treatment before you fly on your next international journey.  Find out more.

#6 Bountiful Bangkok - food glorious food!

Bountiful Bangkok

Most visitors to Bangok will already be familiar with the world-famous Thai cuisine and have a favourite dish they'll be keen to sample when they arrive in Thailand - Som Tum, Tom Yum Gung, Massaman, Pad Thai or a great green or red curry, of course you'll find them all and in abudance.  Although some of these dishes may be toned down for western palattes, you can order by the 'chilli' to get just the heat you need.

As you explore the city, you'll see the locals eating at all hours of the day or night - on the way to work, on the way home, at lunch or for a late night snack, eating with friends is part of the Thai social experience.  Some Thai's don't even have a kitchen at home as they do all their dining at street stalls or at local restaurants.

You'll find food stalls, noodle carts, gourmet food halls, restaurants specialising in international cuisine and themed buffets all over the city.   Food markets also dot the city and are a great early morning excursion to observe how the locals shop and eat.  You'll be amazed by the available selection from fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables to meats and condiments such as sauces, sprinkles, nuts and curry pastes.   Ask your hotel concierge for directions to the closest markets or recommended eateries or visit Bangkok.com for their eating guide.  Bangkok.com

#8 Blessings in Bangkok

Blessings in Bangkok

Immerse yourself in the spiritual side of Bangkok.  It won't be difficult with a majority of 95% of the population being followers of Buddhism and a plethora of mystical temples and spriritual sites around the city.  You will feel the compassion and tolerance exuded by Buddhism beliefs as you experience daily life in this frenetic yet spiritually peaceful capital.  Read more about religion in Thailand here.

#9 Booming Bangkok

Booming Bangkok

If it's been a few years or more since you ventured to the bustling metropolis that is Bangkok, the first thing you'll notice when you next arrive is the skyline.   From a sprawling, low-rise city, a building boom has seen a rapid change in the height of the city, with skyscaping office towers and apartment blocks now towering over the streets and canals.  And where better to enjoy the new skyline than from one of the many rooftop bars opening up for rooftop relaxation and spectacular sunsets.   Find out more here.

#10 Blooming in Bangkok

Blooming in Bangkok

Visitors to Bangkok cannot help but be enchanted by the beautiful flower decorations found across the city...in the market places, at temples, on roadside stalls and in flower arrangements in hotels and shopping malls.  The artistic talents of Thai florists is world-renowned.   If you love blooms as much as we do, take a visit to the Flower Markets in Chinatown or ask your hotel concierge for a market near you.   If you're feeling more adventurous, take a day trip to one of Thailand's spectacular orchid farms.  For more information visit the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
