Baggage Policy (General Service) for Thai Airways International Public Company Ltd.

General Information

Baggage Allowance determination and excess baggage charges calculation apply to baggage to be through checked from the point of departure to the point of arrival without stopover at any of the intermediate points. If passenger takes a stopover at an intermediate point, a new assessment of baggage allowance and baggage charges, if applicable, will be measured from the point of departure following the stopover.

Application to Thai Airways International Public Company Ltd.

Passengers may carry free of charge baggage as specified and subject to the conditions and limitations in THAI Regulations.

The weight allowance has been introduced by THAI for a journey :
 - Wholly within Thailand Domestic sectors,
 - A journey within TC3 (Asia, Australia, New Zealand) and a journey between TC2 (Europe, Africa, Middle East) and TC3 (Asia, Australia, New Zealand)

The Piece Concept used to apply for a journey :
 - To/From the USA and Canada.

Excess Baggage Charges applicable to Purely Domestic Sectors

All excess baggage must be assessed and charged before the passenger boards the aircraft.
Baggage checked in addition to the traveler's baggage allowance. Checked baggage allowance may vary depending on cabin, status level, military status, itinerary and date of purchase.
Baggage carried in excess of the free baggage allowance is charged as follows, irrespective of the class paid for and used by the passenger.
Excess Baggage Charge rate, applicable to a checked portion of travel on purely THAI Domestic sectors, are in Weight Concept on a fixed rate listed below.

Note :

1. The above "Domestic Excess Baggage Charge Table" is effective for a checked portion of travel On/After 23JUL12 until further notice.
2. Excess Baggage Charge rate is per kilogram in THB (Thai Baht).
3. The Excess Baggage Charge per kilogram for any additional THAI Domestic services are 1.5 percent of the highest normal direct one way economy class fare.
4. Child and infant discounted rates are not applicable.
5. For International Excess Baggage Charge rates are separately shown in USD (US Dollars).
6. If baggage is through check from TG Domestic connecting to TG International sectors, the Excess Baggage through check portion of travel is applied by zoning basis.
7. TG Domestic Sectors in Thailand is located by Zone 1. (Please refer Zoning Definitions for International Excess Baggage Charge Table.)
8. The condition on the 5^th note, Currency Conversion: Excess baggage Charges published in USD only will be converted to the Local Currency by using the Banker's Selling Rate on the date of baggage charged.

• Checked Baggage Policy by Weight Concept applicable to International Sectors within TC3, between TC2 and TC3

Note :

1. When a passenger is involuntarily rerouted to a lower class of service, the higher class baggage allowance shall be applied even though the refund for the fare difference is made.

2. The exemption from extra baggage shall be applied to any passengers who traveling on the conditions agreed by THAI and Government sector.

The exemption shall be applied according to the condition on the passenger's ticket only. By government order or agreement, certain passenger categories may have a free baggage allowance deviating from the regular system. Such amended free baggage allowance is stated in the passenger's ticket.
3. The condition on the 2nd note is applicable to passengers traveling from Thailand only. For other areas/countries, follow the rules applied by the national carriers concerned.
4. In case of travel on combined services for through journeys where the passenger travels partly on F-class and partly on C-, U-, or Y-class, the free baggage allowance applicable on each sector of the trip shall be that applicable to the class of service for which the fare is paid.
In case the passenger who has paid F-class fare travels on C-, U- or Y-class, the free baggage allowance shall be that applicable to F-class.
5. Foldable stroller can be loaded in compartment without additional charge.

Baggage carried in excess of the free baggage allowance is charged as follows, irrespective of the class paid for and used by the passenger.
Excess Baggage Charge rate for a check portion of travel within TC3, Between TC2 and TC3 in Weight Concept on a zone basis listed below.

Note :

1. The above "Excess Baggage Charge (Within TC3, Between TC2 and TC3) Table" is effective for a checked portion On/After 23JUL12 until further notice.
2. Excess Baggage Charge rate is per kilogram from Zone 1- Zone 5.
3. Child and infant discounted rates are not applicable.
4. Excess Baggage Charge rate to/from Zone 6 : USA/Canada is based on Piece Concept.(For more details, please refer to the "Excess Baggage Charges (To/From USA/Canada)
5. If baggage is through check from TG Domestic connecting to TG International sectors, the Excess Baggage through check portion of travel is applied by zoning basis. TG Domestic Sectors in Thailand is located by Zone 1. (Please refer Zoning Definitions for International Excess Baggage Charge Table.)
6. Currency Conversion: Excess baggage charges published in USD only will be converted to the Local Currency by using the Banker's Selling Rate on the date of baggage charged.
7. Zoning Definitions :

• Checked Baggage Policy by Piece Concept applicable to an International Sectors to/from USA/Canada

• Royal First Class and Royal Silk Class passengers receive a free baggage allowance of two pieces. The weight of each piece shall not exceed 32 kgs (70 lbs) and linear measurement (length+width+height) shall not exceed 158 cms (62 inches).
• Passengers traveling on economy class are given a free baggage allowance of two pieces. The weight of each item shall not exceed 23 kgs (50 lbs) and linear measurement of each piece shall not exceed 158 linear cms (62 inches).
• Royal Orchid Plus (ROP) Gold Card members will enjoy the privilege of one extra baggage on top of the regular allowance in any class of travel. The applicable privilege will be utilized along with the frequent flyer status to only those tickets that are wholly online or involved interline transportation with other carriers who agreed to the applicable of the bonus.
• Special baggage rate shall be applied for unusual size and weight. Please contact the local THAI?office. For the Excess Baggage Charge rate, please refer "Baggage and Optional Fees for Thai Airways International Public Company Ltd. for travel to/from the USA and Canada"

Carry-on Items

In addition to the checked baggage allowance, each passenger is allowed to hand carry one baggage at maximum length 56 cm (22 inches), width 45 cm (18 inches), thickness 25 cm (10 inches). These dimensions include wheels, handles, and side pockets.
Total weight of the carry-on baggage must not exceed 7 kg (15 lb).
Passengers are required to place the baggage in the overhead compartment or under their own seat.

Passengers can bring the following items free of charge :

• Handbag/wallet/purse with the maximum length 37.5 cm (15 inches), width 25 cm (10 inches), depth 12.5 cm (5 inches), or the total of three dimensions do not exceed 75 cm (30 inches) with the total weight not exceeding 1.5kgs(3.3lb). Notebooks, or portable personal computers are also applied with this condition.

• Walking stick (crutches) used by elderly passengers, sick passengers, and handicapped passengers

• Camera or small binoculars

• Infant food

Note

Spot check may be performed against the test unit and/or weighing machine at the check-in counter and/or at the boarding gate to ensure compliance to these regulations.

Baggage Allowance

Passengers may carry free of charge baggage as specified and subject to the conditions and limitations in THAI Regulations.

The weight allowance has been introduced by THAI for a journey wholly within TC3 (Asia, Australia, New Zealand) and a journey between TC2 (Europe, Africa, Middle East) and TC3 (Asia, Australia, New Zealand) where the Piece Concept used to apply for a journey to/from the USA and Canada. 
For travel to and from the United States Thai Airways provides passengers with a free baggage allowance for adults and infant according to the chart below.

• Royal First Class and Royal Silk Class passengers receive a free baggage allowance of two pieces. The weight of each piece shall not exceed 32 kgs (70 lbs) and linear measurement (length+width+height) shall not exceed 158 cms (62 inches).

Carry-on baggage

Thai Airways International Public Company Ltd. will permit one carry- on bag plus one small personal item per customer to be carried on the aircraft at no charge. The maximum combined linear measurement (length x width x thickness) of the carry-on bag must not exceed 22 inches x 18 inches x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 cm). The maximum weight of the carry-on bag is 15 pounds (7 kg). For more information on allowable carry-on baggage please refer to Baggage Policy (General Service - Carry on Items)

Excess Baggage Charge rate for a checked portion of travel to/from USA/Canada in Piece Concept on a zone basis listed below.

2. Excess baggage charges published in USD will be converted to the local currency by using the Banker's Selling Rate on the date of baggage charged.
3. If baggage is through check from TG Domestic connecting to TG International sectors, the Excess Baggage through check portion of travel is applied by zoning basis. TG Domestic Sectors in Thailand is located by Zone 1. (Please refer Zoning Definitions for International Excess Baggage Charge Table.)
4. Child and infant discounted rates are not applicable.
5. The above table of excess baggage charge will be used on TG flights only.
6. Baggage carried in excess of the free baggage allowance as specified is charged irrespective of the class paid for and used by passenger.
7. Zoning Definitions :

8.The applicable excess baggage charge shall apply to :

   a.The excess number of baggage: each bag (Piece) exceeding 2 checked bags (Piece)

   b.Oversized Baggage: each bag (Piece) exceeding the dimension of 62 inches (158cm) but not exceeding 80 inches (203 cm)

9. Twice the applicable excess baggage charge shall apply to :

   a.The excess number plus oversized: each bag (Piece) exceeding 2 checked bags (Piece) and exceeding the dimension of 62 inches (158 cm), but not exceeding 80 inches (203 cm)

10. Any bag (Piece),

   a. the sum of the three dimensions of which exceeds 80 inches (203 cm), and / or

   b. the weight of which exceeds 70 lbs (32 kg) shall be subject for the following:

      i.Such bag (Piece) shall not be carried as accompanied baggage unless prior handling arrangements have been made in advance and get confirmation from TG.

ii.Such bag (Piece) shall be weighed and shall be charged at 3 times the applicable excess baggage charges for the first 45 kg of fraction thereof for each additional 10 kg. Of the fraction thereof, 1 (One) additional excess baggage charge shall be applied.

Other checked items (To/ from USA and Canada)

Additional Items as checked baggage that may have extra handling charges. The following items are subject to a special handling fee based on itinerary. All fees listed are per item.

Bicycles
A bicycle may be included as part of your free baggage allowance.  For a bicycle above your free baggage allowance, normal excess baggage rates apply: USD119

Golf Equipment (1 set of clubs)**
You may use one of your free baggage allowance piece for a golf set.  If in excess of your free baggage allowance, then 50%of the excess baggage rate shall apply for one golf set: USD60 . 
** One set of Golf equipment consists of maximum 14 clubs, 12 balls, one set of golf shoes. 
Additional golf equipment after the first set will be charged at the normal excess baggage rate: USD119

Snow/Water Skiing Equipment (will be included in the free baggage allowance)
  If it exceeds the baggage allowance, shall be charged 33% of the excess baggage rate: USD40

Surfboards (will not be included in the free baggage allowance)
One board not exceeding 109 inches (277 cm) at 50% of excess baggage charge : USD60
Any surfboards exceeding 109 inches (277 cm)   will be charged the full excess baggage fee: USD119
A second board shall be charged at the full excess baggage rate: USD119

Windsurf Equipment  (will not be included in the free baggage allowance)
One board not exceeding 109 inches (277 cm) at 50% of excess baggage charge : USD60
Any surfboards exceeding 109 inches (277 cm)  will be charged the full excess baggage fee: USD119
A second board shall be charged at the full excess baggage rate: USD119

Scuba Diving Equipment (will be included in the free baggage allowance)
If it exceeds the baggage allowance, shall be charged at : USD119

Bulky Baggage/Oversized/Overweight Piece
Normal excess charges shall apply as stated above

Weapons Firearms ammunition (will be included in the free baggage allowance)
If it exceeds the baggage allowance, shall be charged at : USD119

Sporting firearms
Will be accepted as one piece of baggage; if in excess will be charged at : USD119 

One portable musical instrument (not exceeding 39 inches / 100 cm) in length
Shall be considered in free baggage allowance.  Normal excess baggage rate shall apply: USD119

Other articles and sport equipment
Shall be included in the baggage allowance.  If in excess, apply normal excess baggage rate: USD119

Pets in Cabin (PETC)
Passengers may bring their dog or cat on board in the cabin with the maximum weight up to 10kgs including the container not exceeding the measurements (55length x 37width x 30height).  THAI requests that the local THAI office be advised at least 48 hours in advance, due to  some limitation of the number of pets accepted on board. Pets as Checked Baggage (AVIH)
Should the dog or cat exceed the 10kgs weight or the measurement to transport as PETC, then the pet shall be transported as checked baggage. For transportation of pets (under 32 kg/70lbs) the charge will be twice of the normal excess baggage rate: USD119 X 2 = USD238

USD150 to USD300 on international flight depending on how much flow rate of oxygen supplement is required.

Stretcher Transportation
6 (six) times the full economy class fare will be charged for passengers who need to be transported as lying flat under medical condition.

Cabin Class Upgrade (for flights to/from USA) The following optional fee is applicable for cabin upgrade from / to LAX for flight operated by THAI.

Interline Journey

General Information

Baggage Allowance determination and excess baggage charges calculation apply to baggage to be through checked from the point of departure to the point of arrival without stopover at any of the intermediate points. If passenger takes a stopover at an intermediate point, a new assessment of baggage allowance and baggage charges, if applicable, will be measured from the point of departure following the stopover.

If you travel with additional weight or piece baggage which is considered as over carrier baggage allowance, the excess baggage charge shall be applied. THAI provides the amount of the charges varied in accordance with your baggage checked portion when you travel with THAI. If your journey and/or your baggage checked portion are comprised of more than one carrier, other carrier’s baggage rules may apply.

Interline Baggage Selection:

Generally, a common baggage provision, IATA Resolution 302, is applicable to IATA airline members (including THAI). The resolution regulates which carrier’s baggage rules apply when your journey and/or baggage checked portion comprised of two or more carriers (Interline baggage provision). The IATA Resolution 302 is considered in accordance with the IATA Traffic Conference Areas.

In order to facilitate the adjustment of fares, fees and other charges, IATA has divided the world into three main ‘Areas’. These Areas are called Area1, Area2 and Area3. They are regularly used in the interpretation of tariff rules and in the calculation of international air fares. Airlines sometimes refer to these areas as TC (Tariff Conference), TC1 (for Area1), TC2 (for Area2) and TC3 (for Area3).

Under each Area there are smaller ‘sub-areas’ or ‘regions’ which, in the IATA context, may have a different meaning from that generally implied by the geographical term.

Area 1 is composed of the whole of the Western Hemisphere.
Area 2 is Europe, Middle, and Africa.
Area 3 is composed of the whole of Asia and the neighboring islands (with the exception of the part included in TC2); Australia, New Zealand and neighboring islands and also the Pacific Islands (except those included in TC1).

Determination of carrier’s baggage rule in accordance with your baggage checked portion

1. For travel between two or more Tariff Conference Areas, the carrier performing carriage on the first sector that crosses from one area to another on that checked portion determines the baggage rule.
2. For travel between Tariff Conference Sub-areas, the carrier performing carriage on the first sector that crosses from one sub-area to another on that checked portion determines the baggage rule.               
3. For travel within a Tariff Conference Sub-area, the carrier performing carriage on the first international sector on that checked portion determines the baggage rule.
4. For travel within a single country, the carrier performing on the first Operating Carrier on the checked portion determines the baggage rule.

Note: If you travel involved a so-called code-share flight, the carrier performing as the aircraft  operating on that checked portion determines the baggage rule.

Travel to/from the USA

In general, for passengers whose ultimate ticketed origin or destination is the United States and/or its territories, the baggage provisions selected at the beginning of the itinerary shall apply throughout the journey, regardless of stopovers.

If THAI baggage rule applies on your journey to the United States/US Territories, it is also THAI baggage rule applies on the return though you makes a stopover en-route.

In case of code-share flights that include a point in the United States/US Territories, the carrier performing as the marketing carrier determines the baggage rule.

If your journey involves multiple airline partners, please be aware that baggage rules may vary. The baggage rules that apply for your journey may be those of our partner airlines. In some cases, they may apply their own baggage rule regardless of the code-share rules and rules for both outbound and inbound portion of travel.
