Japanese government is fortifying border controls and quarantine measures for people entering Japan in order to prevent a steep rebound in Covid19 infections and the spread of its muted strains.
For the time being, foreign nationals who have stayed in any of 159 countries/regions which are listed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (as of May 21, 2021) within 14 days prior to the application for landing are denied to enter Japan unless special exceptional circumstances are found.
Followings are temporarily being suspended to prevent the spread of Covid19;
- new entry for foreign nationals from all countries and regions
- special measures when returning or re-entering Japan from a short-term business trip to all countries and regions
- framework of Business Track and Residence Track,
As a strengthened border measure, for the time being from March 19, 2021, all travelers including Japanese nationals have to submit a certificate of negative test result conducted within 72 hours (from the sampling time to departure time of the flight) when entering Japan. Those who do not submit a certificate of negative test result will be rejected to board by airline companies.
In addition, untill further notice, all those who enter, re-enter or return to Japan (including Japanese nationals) are also subject to conducting of Covid19 test upon arrival no matter whether arriving from the countries/regions designated as an area subject to denial of permission to enter Japan or not. All Japanese nationals and foreign nationals with the status of residence are also required to submit the Written Pledge in which travelers pledge to remain at home (or etc.) for 14days after arrival, not to use public transportation, to install some smartphone applications to report your locations/health conditions, and so forth.
Besides, additional border enforcement measures are being introduced for those who enter, re-enter or return to Japan from countries/regions with coronavirus variants, including B.1.617 variant emerged in India. The measures require self-quarantine for specific days at a location designated by the quarantine station chief (before self-quarantine at home).
<New Border Measure for Thailand>
Thailand has been designated as a country with coronavirus variant (B.1.617) confirmed for the first time in India.
Effective from 04 June 2021, Japanese and foreign nationals from Thailand are requested to stay for 3 days at specific facilities designated by the chief of the quarantine station (limited to the accommodations facilities designated by the chief of the quarantine station), and then required to take the COVID-19 tests on the third day. Those who have negative result in the test may leave the facility and are requested to self-quarantine at home during the remaining period of 14 days after entering Japan.
